What is soy wax and why is it used in scented candles?
During our peak trading periods we have more requests for information regarding what ingredients we use. This includes questions around wax and how sustainable our products are. Some of the questions we get asked are...
- Are your scented candles suitable for vegans?
- Do you use sustainable products?
In a moving world where we all become more socially conscious. We are able to answer.... Yes.
We proudly use soy wax to make each and everyone of our hand poured scented candles.
Why do we use Soy Wax?
Do you know the differences between the 4 key waxes? We want to share with you the differences in wax - so you are equipped to make the decisions that are right to you and understand your choices.
Soy Wax
Soy wax is a clean burning wax as it is made with no toxins or pollutants. As a vegetable based wax it does not give any harmful by products or produce black soot. For this reason, this is the only wax we use. Soy wax gives a clean burn, that creates no soot (as long as the wick is managed) and creates no tunnelling. Soy wax is sustainable and eco-friendly.
Paraffin Wax
Paraffin wax is heavily used in the candle making world. It is not considered the most eco-friendly as it is a by product from the oil industry. A paraffin candle may also produce soot. The only benefit of Paraffin wax that we know of is that it burns at a much higher temperature which means the scents will fill your room quicker.
One of the more common questions we are asked is Do you use Paraffin Wax - our answer is no.
Bees Wax
Bees wax is one of the oldest forms of wax and is another eco-friendly wax. Since it is derived from bees during honey making season. Because of this, beeswax has a very subtle natural sweet aroma that helps fill the air. Typically bees wax is used for pillar candles. The draw backs of bees wax is that it is more expensive and with it being only made by honey bees supply is limited. Finally it takes a lot of energy for a honey bee to produce bees wax.
The future of wax..
Coconut wax - although it is not in its infancy any more, it's the most expensive wax to source and purchase. Coconut wax delivers a clean burn and holds both the colour of the candle and scent well. As we touched on unfortunately this wax tends to be the most expensive.
To ensure that our scented candles are of the best quality we use the finest eco friendly and affordable high quality soy wax.
